GUATEMALA CITY (AP) — Guatemala’s prosecutor for electoral crimes has asked the Supreme Court of Justice to strip five magistrates of the country’s top electoral authority of their immunity so they can be investigated on fraud allegations made by the loser of the Aug. 20 presidential election. It is the latest example of elections that observers declared to be free and fair being dragged into the courts, even as President-elect Bernardo Arévalo begins the official transition with outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei. The National Unity of Hope party of former first lady Sandra Torres filed a fraud complaint after the election. The party’s lawyer Carlos López said 164 precinct tallies duplicated votes. The party wants the magistrates of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal investigated for allegedly not carrying out their duties.Later Tuesday, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal gave Arévalo and his running mate Karin Herrera the credentials formally making them president-elect and vice presid...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:14:29 GMT

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Of all the players the New York Giants added in the offseason, no one has created as much excitement and expectation as tight end Darren Waller. The soon-to-be 31-year-old Waller has opened eyes since being acquired from Las Vegas in March for a third-round draft pick. He was outstanding in the offseason and he has been a go-to guy for quarterback Daniel Jones since training camp opened in late July.In the only preseason game the No. 1 offense played, Waller had three catches for 30 yards in a game-opening touchdown drive against the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 18. The real test comes Sunday night when the Giants open the regular season at home against the Dallas Cowboys, an NFC East rival that has won four straight against New York. What’s interesting is the Giants have always had trouble handling Dallas’ tight ends in recent years with Dalton Schultz and Jason Witten. Waller laughed on Tuesday when asked about some people expecting him to have ...

Greeks do so many things so well. Food, for one, but also, big, beautiful weddings and one of the best romantic comedies of all time.“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is a trilogy now, and in this new installment, the whole family is heading to the homeland. Now, Nia Vardalos not only stars in the movie this time, she also wrote it and directs. But without Michael Constantine, who passed away in 2021, there will be less Windex on this set but even more love.“My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” is as laugh inducing as it is thought-provoking.But this time around, after the death of one of its main stars two years ago, it’s more heart-warming than ever.Nia Vardalos: “I wanted to pay tribute. Everybody’s got a Michael Constantine story. He’s funny and it’s hard for me actually to speak about him in the past tense because he’s so much a part of us.”Gia Cardes: “OK, Joey Fatone has a brand new tattoo. It says ‘there you go, Gus...

Texas AG Ken Paxton pleads not guilty at impeachment trial and then leaves as arguments get underway

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:14:29 GMT

By JAKE BLEIBERG and PAUL J. WEBER (Associated Press)AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The historic impeachment trial of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton began Tuesday with accusations of corruption that went unchecked for years and the Republican pleading not guilty as his party confronts whether to oust one of former President Donald Trump’s biggest defenders. But the day ended without Paxton around at all — he left and did not return after the state Senate overwhelming rejected his numerous attempts to dismiss the charges. His absence does not stop Texas’ first impeachment trial in nearly 50 years but demonstrates the potential twists ahead in the coming weeks. He was not the only one who left early: Although the start of the trial was carried live by some Texas stations and supporters of Paxton lined up before sunrise outside the Capitol, by the end empty seats in the Senate gallery outnumbered onlookers. If convicted, Paxton could be barred from holding elected offic...

Mets Notebook: Carlos Carrasco done for season after fracturing pinky

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 21:14:29 GMT

WASHINGTON — It appears as though Carlos Carrasco’s time with the Mets has come to an early end.The Mets shut the right-hander down this week after a weight-room accident left him with a fractured right pinky over the weekend. Carrasco was placing a 50-pound dumbbell on the ground while doing a workout at Citi Field on Sunday, and the weight flipped over and crushed the pinky on his pitching hand.Since then, he had back-to-back procedures to correct the injury, with the most recent coming Tuesday when he had a pin placed in his finger. The timeline for a return is 4-6 weeks, meaning he’s done for the season, and likely in New York as well. Carrasco will be a free agent following the conclusion of the World Series and his disastrous 2023 season isn’t likely to entice the Mets to sign him again.“He had some good outings this year,” manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday afternoon at Nationals Park before the start of a two-game series against the Washi...
