PARIS (AP) — Opponents of French President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64 staged a new round of protests Saturday to push the government to withdraw the unpopular plan. Determination remained high, but crowds were far smaller than in past protests. The nationwide marches, the second round of protests in four days and the seventh since January, were bolstered by ongoing strikes in key sectors, from energy to transport and garbage workers. Uncollected trash piled up in Paris and other cities.Police clashed with troublemakers in several cities, notably Paris, charging, tackling and pepper-spraying intruders dressed in black who set fires to piles of trash along the march route and destroyed bus stops, a street lamp and other urban equipment. Such “radical elements,” in the language of police, typically join protests to cause trouble. Paris police said 30 people were detained.Police counted 48,000 protesters in Paris, and the Interior Ministry said there...

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Jorge Campillo made eight birdies and finished with four in a row for a superb 63 to take the lead after three rounds of the European tour’s Kenya Open on Saturday. The Spaniard moved to 13-under-par overall for the clubhouse lead and no one could overtake that early mark.Campillo is ahead by a shot from Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who put himself in the reckoning with a 6-under 65 on the par-71 Muthaiga Golf Club course.MacIntyre came within inches of the lead on his final hole when he nearly sank a wedge for an albatross on No. 18. The ball hit the hole, bounced away, and MacIntyre missed his eagle putt and had to settle for birdie, 12-under overall and one off the lead.Japan’s Masahiro Kawamura (68) and South Africa’s Jayden Schafer (69) were tied for third two shots off the lead and also in the hunt for the title.Campillo began the third round five shots behind compatriot and overnight leader Nacho Elvira, but was on the move with bi...

LEICESTER, England (AP) — Chelsea’s recent revival under Graham Potter continued at Leicester with a 3-1 win in the English Premier League on Saturday, making it three straight wins in all competitions for the London club.Kai Havertz’s fine finish restored the visitors’ lead just before halftime after Patson Daka equalized, and Mateo Kovacic’s volley added the third for Chelsea in the second half.Chelsea forward Joao Felix hit the post and had a goal ruled out by VAR while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall missed a sitter for the hosts before Leicester’s Wout Faes was sent off late on.After reaching the Champions League quarterfinals by knocking out Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, Chelsea’s latest win eases the pressure even further on Potter. It was just the second time Chelsea scored three times in a league game, and there was a fluidity and clinical edge which has been lacking this season. For Leicester, the loss edged Brendan Rodgers’ team closer to the relegation zone...

Everton scores early to end Brentford’s unbeaten run in EPL

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Dwight McNeil’s goal after just 35 seconds was enough to give Everton another 1-0 win at Goodison Park on Saturday as Sean Dyche’s team climbed two points clear of the English Premier League relegation zone by ending Brentford’s long unbeaten run.McNeil proved effective at both ends of the pitch as the winger’s third goal of the season was accompanied by a second-half goalline clearance.Everton recorded a third victory by a single goal in four home games.McNeil’s strike was Everton’s earliest winning goal in the ground’s 131-year history.Dyche’s team then defended relentlessly as Brentford laid siege to the Everton goal in the second half as the visitor sought to keep alive its 12-game unbeaten league run stretching back to October.Brentford’s club-record top-flight unbeaten streak of 14, set in 1936, was also ended by Everton at Goodison Park. The win lifted Everton to 15th place, two points above the drop zone.___More AP soccer: https://a...

LEEDS, England (AP) — Jack Harrison rescued a point for Leeds in a 2-2 home draw against Brighton and it was not enough to lift his side out of the English Premier League relegation zone on Saturday.Harrison curled home a 78th-minute equalizer having earlier scored an own goal to give Brighton a 2-1 lead, as Leeds twice hit back against the in-form visitor.Alexis Mac Allister’s header was canceled out by Patrick Bamford’s equalizer before the break and Harrison made amends for turning the ball into his own net in the second half with a well-taken finish.Leeds dropped into the bottom three before kickoff after Bournemouth’s surprise home win against Liverpool, and stayed in 19th place despite the point. Brighton’s opener came after Pascal Gross picked out Kaoru Mitoma at the far post and his header back across the face of goal was headed home by Mac Allister.Bamford then collected a pass on the edge of the area and crashed home an equalizer via a deflection off Adam Webster and the c...

Chelsea wins again, Liverpool loses at Bournemouth in EPL

LONDON (AP) — Chelsea might finally be finding its stride under Graham Potter while Liverpool’s up-and-down season took another nosedive in the English Premier League on Saturday.Chelsea made it three straight wins in all competitions for the first time since October by beating Leicester 3-1 away, another sign that the expensively assembled team is starting to gel under Potter.Liverpool, though, followed its record 7-0 win over archrival Manchester United by losing 1-0 at relegation-threatened Bournemouth — a team it beat 9-0 at home in August. That threw away much of the momentum Liverpool generated recently after a woeful first half of the season, and Jurgen Klopp’s team is six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham in the fight for the final Champions League place, albeit with a game in hand.Tottenham beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at home after Harry Kane scored twice in the first half.Bournemouth began the day in last place but climbed up to 17th, with Everton also leaving the releg...
