Bowman charged with misdemeanor over fire alarm

By Lindsay Whitehurst | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Democratic Rep. Jamaal Bowman was charged Wednesday with a misdemeanor for triggering a fire alarm as lawmakers scrambled to pass a funding bill before a government shutdown deadline in September. He is expected to plead guilty, formally apologize and pay a $1,000 fine. The false fire alarm charge would then be dropped if he successfully completes 3 months of probation. The alarm forced the evacuation of a House office building for over an hour. The New York lawmaker has acknowledged pulling the alarm and said it was a mistake. He was in a rush to go to vote, tried to go through a door that was unexpectedly closed and wrongly thought pulling the fire alarm lever would help him open it, he said.At the time of the evacuation, House Democrats were working to delay a vote on a funding bill to keep federal agencies open. They had said they needed time to review a bill that Republicans abruptly released to avoid a shutdown. The funding pa...New SF Giants manager Bob Melvin expects club to consider signing Shohei Ohtani or another big bat this offseason

SAN FRANCISCO — It didn’t take long for Shohei Ohtani to be mentioned. On the day the San Francisco Giants made Bob Melvin the 39th manager in club history, questions were already surfacing about who the Giants would be pursuing in free agency and whether or not this team would add star power to build around its star manager.Ohtani, 29, is expected to net the biggest contract in baseball history this winter. Despite undergoing elbow surgery that will likely keep him from pitching until 2025, he remains an elite talent who could fetch $400 million or more on an open market. As of Wednesday, the Giants were considered the third-most likely team to sign Ohtani at plus-500 odds (bet $100 to win $500) according to BetOnline.Melvin was asked directly about trying to recruit three of the biggest free agents: Ohtani, 25-year-old Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto and 30-year-old lefty Blake Snell, the former American League Cy Young Award winner who played the last two seaso...One dead, one wounded in San Leandro business shooting

ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) — Substitute forward Evanilson scored a hat trick as Porto enjoyed a second-half revival to beat Antwerp 4-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday and further reduce the Belgian club’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage.Antwerp has now lost its three opening matches in Group H. Barcelona tops the standings with a perfect record of three wins and a three-point lead over Porto. Shakhtar Donetsk is in third place with three points.“I never imagined that when I came on, I’d score three goals,” Evanilson said. “It’s incredible, not even in my best dreams. I don’t even know if I’ll sleep tonight.”Antwerp produced a gritty first-half display that was rewarded with a goal from Alhassan Yusuf. But their catastrophic start to the second half was too much to handle as they once again surrendered a lead. Before Evanilson — who came on in the 44th minute — and Stephen Eustaquio turned things round for Porto, the hosts had won most of the duels in a close contest...Latest news
